ACCESS DIGEST: CA Secure Choice, Social Security, 2016 Color of Wealth Summit, and More…
California Secure Choice Update
In 2012, California became the first state in the country to pass legislation to establish a state-sponsored Automatic Individual Retirement Account (Auto IRA) program, California Secure Choice, to increase private-sector employees’ access to employer-provided retirement savings plans. However, the original legislation required a report, funded without public resources, to assess the feasibility and make recommendations to the legislature on the structure of the program. The report was completed on February 9 and hearings will be held to gather public feedback in Los Angeles and Oakland in early March, click here for more information.
Growing Life Expectancy Gaps and What It Means for Social Security
Take a look at the new report, Later Retirement, Inequality in Old Age, and the Growing Gap in Longevity between Rich and Poor, which presents evidence that some of the (Social Security) program’s progressivity is being offset due to a growing gap in life expectancy between the rich and the poor. According to the report’s authors: Barry Bosworth, Gary Burtless, and Kan Zhang, “the gap between lifetime benefits received by poor and less educated workers and the benefits received by high-income and well educated workers is widening in favor of the higher income workers.” Download the full paper and learn more about this research.
